Michael Wornum; Former Assemblyman, Mayor in Marin County

Michael Wornum, 70, a former California assemblyman who also served as mayor of two cities. Wornum began his political career in 1960 and stayed active in local politics until about a month before his death. Born in London, Wornum came to California in his youth and graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. He later earned his master’s degree in city planning. He was elected to the Mill Valley City Council in 1960, served for eight years and was mayor twice. In 1968 he was elected to the Marin County Board of Supervisors and in 1974 won a seat in the Assembly. Wornum was reelected in 1976 but was defeated in 1978. In 1980, he was appointed to the California Coastal Commission, where he opposed the George Bush Administration’s plan to allow more oil drilling off the coast. That same year, he was elected to the Larkspur City Council, where he eventually became mayor. In Larkspur of stomach cancer on an undisclosed date.
