Shell Retreats From Iran Oil Field Deal: U.S. trade sanctions against Iran have prompted the Shell Oil Co. to pull back from a possible deal with Tehran to develop two Iranian oil fields, the Middle East Economic Survey newsletter said. President Clinton’s trade sanctions against Iran have made the supply of equipment that Shell would need to bring the two Sirri fields in the Persian Gulf more expensive and problematic, it said. “It was the indirect effects of the U.S. embargo on the commercial execution of the contract terms which prompted Shell to bow out,” it said.
