From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Turkish troops launched their largest cross-border operation against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq since a six-week drive in spring, the military said. Iraqi Kurds said Turkish planes bombed seven villages about nine miles inside Iraqi territory, wounding three civilians and damaging houses. Turkish officials denied there had been civilian casualties, and said that 57 guerrillas had been killed. The Foreign Ministry described the offensive, which began Wednesday, as a “few limited, pinpoint operations.”
