Early Exit an Example of Decline in Manners

Share

* In the past 10 years I have attended several graduations and have witnessed an increase in the decline of manners by the public.

On May 31, I participated in the commencement services at Cal State Northridge, receiving a master’s degree in history. We master’s candidates worked hard for our degrees. We hoped for fond memories of our graduation. Instead, we witnessed inconsiderate behavior by guests and most of the baccalaureate candidates.

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is large. Thus, the calling of each baccalaureate candidate’s name took a long time. When the time came to recognize the master’s candidates and all graduates receiving honors, most of the graduates and their guests began to leave. This rude action illustrates a selfish attitude that seems to permeate our society. Once an individual had his needs met, the other person’s feelings were of no concern.

Admittedly, we were all tired from sitting, desiring to leave and celebrate our accomplishments. However, I would like to think that at least the graduates would have set an example and exhibited patience, understanding and respect for their fellow students.

This discourteous behavior demonstrates an alarming trend in society. The lack of civility does not bode well for our future. If we are to survive as a Democratic society, we need to respect one another.
