13-Year-Old Beats Gold Medalist in 100 Breaststroke

SANTA CLARA — Amanda Beard, a 13-year-old representing the Irvine Novas, easily beat 1992 Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders in the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday in the Santa Clara International.
Beard, who broke two of Tracy Caulkin’s meet records in the Mission Viejo Meet of Champions, finished in 1 minute, 11.05 seconds.
