SIMI VALLEY : Elks Lodge Seeks Campground OK

Share

A local Elks Lodge is requesting city approval to open a private campground for recreational vehicles on its Simi Valley property.

The eight-space campground near Kuehner Drive and Katherine Road would provide traveling Elks a place to stay in Simi Valley.

“This is something that’s fairly common throughout the country with the Elks lodges,” said Ken Willmon, a trustee with Lodge 2492 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. “Some of them have fairly elaborate camping areas.”

The Simi campground, which comes before the planning commission tonight, won’t be elaborate. The lodge has provided eight parking spaces with hookups for electricity, water and sewage. Nearby, a storage area will give local Elks a place to park up to eight recreational vehicles.

The spaces and storage area have already been built. In October, the city investigated a complaint that recreational vehicles and trailers were being stored on the site, according to the city’s Environmental Services Department.

Lodge representatives told city planners they had not known that storing the vehicles without a permit would violate city codes.

The Environmental Services Department has recommended approval of the project.
