Unocal Forms Scrap Company: The Los Angeles-based firm said it has formed the company to help Southern California employers use vehicle scrapping programs to reduce air pollution and meet work trip reduction goals. As of July 1, work sites in the South Coast Air Quality Management District that have more than 100 employees are allowed to substitute vehicle scrapping for traditional work trip reduction plans, such as ride sharing and van pooling, to reduce air pollution. “Eco-SCRAP will draw on Unocal Corp.’s expertise in scrapping older, heavily polluting vehicles to reduce air pollution,” Unocal Chairman and Chief Executive Roger C. Beach said. Ronald J. Mertz, a 30-year veteran of Unocal, was named president of the new company.
