Jesse Jackson Teams With Union to Fight County Layoffs
The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Monday joined a county union’s fight to stop the Board of Supervisors from laying off 10,000 employees to cut its massive budget deficit.
“I stand with the workers today, tomorrow and forever,” Jackson said at a news conference held to announce a union protest today. “Let us not stand by as parks, libraries and recreational centers are closed and new jails are being built.”
Jackson is slated to lead the protest at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, which employee union spokesman Steve Weingarten said will be the largest demonstration staged by the union this year.
The union is demanding that supervisors hold off making cuts until they know how much money they will receive from the federal and state governments. But the board is holding its budget deliberations this week and is expected to pass a spending plan by Friday.
