Southeast : CEMETERY PLAN

Share

State officials might not have the funding for their plan to straighten out a troubled cemetery in Santa Fe Springs, but the plan does have an acronym.

It’s called Project REST--Restoring Everyone’s Sanctity and Tranquillity--and it proposes to find out who is buried where in Paradise Memorial Park. REST also proposes spending $618,000 for maintenance, though funds have not been approved by the state’s Cemetery Board.

“We’re all looking for a solution to this tragedy,” said Louis Bonsignore, a state Department of Consumer Affairs spokesman. “The problem of funding is going to be difficult to overcome.

The cemetery has been in trouble since last month, when it was discovered that operators of Paradise had been digging up bodies to resell graves.

Five workers from Consumer Affairs have been assigned to oversee the cataloguing of bodies and graves at Paradise, Bonsignore said.
