It’s Your Life / People, Places and Things to do. : Ghost-Tour Slots Are Vanishing

Ghostly excursions in the Discover Ventura series are so successful that people dying to visit “haunted” local sites have to sign up quickly.

The city-sponsored treks sell out fast, and that may be the case for Saturday’s Ghosts & Ghouls walk. Spirit guide Richard Senate will lead the magical mystery tour.

Because of their popularity, fall ghost tours were expanded to the summer. This latest expedition may join the Phantoms & Folklore bus trip as a regular biannual attraction, confirming suspicions that Ventura is a real ghost town.

Senate, author of eight books on Ventura County ghosts, is working on a ninth concerning Ojai Valley phantoms. He says there’s no mystery about our fascination with the supernatural.

“If we see ghosts, that means we will--in some ethereal form--continue to exist,” he says. “That belief is part of the universal characteristic of being human. You find ghosts in the earliest records of men, written on clay tablets and papyrus.”

* Ghosts & Ghouls tour, $6 for adults, $4 seniors and children; 7-9 p.m. Saturday; 658-4726.
