Train Robberies
The July 23 story regarding freight trains on the Southern Pacific line through New Mexico being held up and robbed by outlaws from Mexico smacks of the days of the Wild West when Indians raided wagon trains headed west of the Mississippi River.
The solution to the problem may have to be the same, i.e., placing a contingent of U.S. Army troops on every train that crosses the area, armed to the teeth, with orders to fire on the outlaws, if that becomes necessary. Like the wagon trains of the 1850s era, which were protected by U.S. Cavalry troopers, the outlaws, like the Indians, will learn to keep their distance.
