THE BOMB, I
I started work on ballistic missiles in 1956 at the time of the missile gap and left in 1971 after witnessing the arrival of the MIRV (Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles) system. I have since channeled my sense of responsibility into action with the Peace with Justice Task Force of the United Methodist Church. I remain frustrated with the growing realization that it is our government that is preventing the elimination of nuclear weapons.
Did we have to increase the size of nuclear bombs and produce thousands of them? Did we have to develop intercontinental delivery systems with multiple bombs that made it so advantageous to strike first? Does mankind need the capability to destroy our planet?
Did we have to reject Soviet disarmament proposals in the 1980s and Russian suggestions for deeper armament cuts in this decade? Must we, as the Pentagon wants, continue to maintain a significant permanent inventory of nuclear weapons.
The threat will continue until all the missiles have been dismantled.
