IBM Came Close to Taking Apple: Armonk, N.Y.-based International Business Machines Corp. came close to swallowing Apple Computer Inc. of Cupertino, Calif., last summer but decided after high-level talks not to carry out a takeover, an IBM executive has confirmed. According to the executive, who did not want to be identified, the strategic talks between top officials at both companies and an intermediary firm broke down after IBM decided Apple did not have enough to offer. Industry sources have said they believed IBM and Apple had held merger talks, but both companies have refused to officially comment on speculation.
