Nissan Motor Co., Japan’s second-largest auto maker, will slash prices on optional passenger-side air bags and anti-lock braking systems as a way to promote use of those safety features, the company said Thursday.

Beginning Sept. 1, Nissan will cut the price of a passenger-side air-bag option to $437 from $1,092. The price of an optional ABS system will be trimmed to $764 from the current range of $851 to $1,255.

Nissan’s move to make driver-side air bags standard on its new models, ahead of other Japanese makers, is one reason the company’s car sales have been improving.

The company said that by September, all its new passenger cars will have driver-side air bags. And the feature will become standard on all Nissan recreational vehicles by early next year, the company said.

Passenger-side air bags are now optional on 14 Nissan models.
