Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Chechen rebels kept a fragile peace agreement with Russia on track by surrendering more weapons, but the process was delayed when a boy was fatally wounded in a shooting incident. The hand-over in Achkhoi-Martan, scene of a tense standoff between rebels and Russian troops, was postponed after a Chechen woman and two boys were wounded in an exchange of fire on the outskirts of the town. One of the boys, 11, later died. It was not immediately clear how the shooting occurred and who was responsible for the death. The Chechens eventually handed over some of their weapons to the authorities in Achkhoi-Martan; they were paid in cash for their sacrifices.
