They came here from Mexico 214 years ago, 44 people from 11 families, looking for a place where they would build Our Lady Queen of Angels, the city now known as Los Angeles.

At 6 a.m. Monday, history buffs can join Los Pobladores 200, descendants of those 11 families, who will re-enact the last nine miles of that journey in what has become a traditional walk from the San Gabriel Mission through the Eastside to the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument.

The annual walk, first undertaken to celebrate Los Angeles’ bicentennial in 1981, is the high point of a two-day bash. Festivities kick off Sunday at 10 a.m. and include food, games and entertainment.

“It’s held at the place where the city was originally founded, so it has special significance,” said Frank Catania, general manager of El Pueblo.

About 200 to 250 people are expected to walk from San Gabriel through Alhambra and Lincoln Park to Downtown Los Angeles.
