Dissident Held for Refusing to Report Thoughts
A leading Chinese dissident has been arrested for refusing to report his thoughts to police, a human rights group said Saturday.
Officials ordered Liu Gang to report his thoughts to police every week after they released him from prison in June. He served a six-year sentence for his leading role in the 1989 Tian An Men Square democracy movement.
Liu, 34, was arrested Friday after a court in his hometown of Liaoyuan upheld a lower court’s ruling to punish him for disobeying the orders, the New York-based Human Rights in China said.
When Liu was released in June, police in the northeast province of Jilin banned him from talking to foreign reporters and from leaving his hometown. They also ordered him to report periodically to the police and relate his thoughts.
Liu has refused to obey any of the orders. He says police have crashed into taxis he’s been in, robbed him in broad daylight, detained him and searched him.
