FRIED FARMERS: This idea literally wilted away. . . . High temperatures and low sales will soon close the 3-month-old Canyon Country Farmers’ Market at Via Princessa Road. “The farmers were sweating and not happy,” said Santa Clarita spokeswoman Gail Ortiz. “And the produce was wilting.” The market will close Tuesday.

COSTLY MISTAKE: When is the death of a dog worth $30,000? When the dog is shot by a security guard, apparently. Earlier this year, while a Laurel Canyon family was on vacation, a guard shot and killed their German shepherd. Now the security firm has agreed to pay $30,000 to compensate the couple in an out-of-court settlement (B1).

LUNCHABLE: Cal State Northridge President Blenda J. Wilson threw a party Tuesday. A picnic, to be exact. More than 5,000 hot dogs and 600 pounds of cole slaw were scarfed up by students during the third annual “Welcome Back” picnic. . . . But Wilson, above, opted to go elsewhere for lunch. “I said to the students, ‘I know this is good but it’s not very nutritious,’ ” she joked (B3).

DISTANT IMPACT: Although he’s been in a coma at Northridge Hospital Medical Center since a July 29 automobile accident, Brant Theurer still has an impact on the football field (C7). . . . Fellow players at Lancaster’s Paraclete High regularly drive the 120-plus-mile round trip to visit Theurer. Said one player: “The best thing we can do in his absence is be a class act out on the field.”
