It wasn’t that long ago when greeting cards were under $1 and paper plates seemed like a worthwhile alternative to a sink full of dirty dishes. Now the cost of a card is approaching that of a gift and prices for paper tabletop items can negate their use altogether. Unless, of course, you know where to go to hold those costs down.
The place to know is Party Corner, in Tarzana and Mission Hills, where all the greeting cards are 50% off retail and paper goods are 20% to 50% below retail.
The stores’ selection of greeting cards covers all the categories and birthday wishes for specific ages and relationships are in English and in Spanish. All special occasions seem to be covered, from christenings to graduations to weddings and anniversaries.
Magic Moments, Pleasant Thoughts, Image Arts and Gallant, Renaissance, and Dickens are among the major card manufacturers whose products are found in the racks; these retail from $1 to $4.50. Deduct half and you’ve got the picture.
In paper table accessories, Contempo is a quality line, with their paper plates earning the industry’s highest rating. The 7-inch plates carry a suggested price of $4.20 for a package of 25, but Party Corner’s price is $1.87. Fifty three-ply matching cocktail napkins are $1.79, instead of $4.10.
Purchasing wrapping paper in continuous lengths can end those frustrating sessions trying to wrap very large gifts with the cut sheets provided in packaged papers. It’s also a way to save big. The price range on some truly handsome papers (solids, florals, stripes and foils), measuring 26 to 30 inches wide and mounted on wall rollers, is $1.37 to $2.37 for a five foot length. Since a standard gift wrap roll is five feet long and sells for $3.50, the savings by buying in bulk run between $1.50 to more than $2, plus you can turn a wrapping nightmare into a breeze.
There’s also a pretty good break on printed and personalized invitations for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and more. Figure 25% off on the Regency and Carlsoncraft and 15% off on Encore and Elite.
In North Hollywood, this discounter goes by the name All American Party Store and the same prices prevail.
Weekend Super Sale: Starting Friday and going through Sept. 17, there’s a major clearance at Society, where some top designer women’s apparel (I cannot mention the names) regularly sells at healthy discounts. At this End-of-the-Season Sale, prices will come in at 50% to 80% off the regular retail prices on first quality and current merchandise. The store carries a big selection of fall and summer lines for the professional woman.
