At least 100 million live land mines are still in use around the world, the organization devoted to eliminating them said Monday.

Handicap International told a news conference that at a Vienna conference in October it will seek wholesale changes in a 1980 convention that governs use of the mines.

The organization--which is campaigning for a new accord to restrict use of land mines in peacetime as well as during conflicts and to prohibit the use of mines intended to maim--said 1 million people have been killed.
