Millions of Land Mines Still in Use, Group Says

BRUSSELS —
At least 100 million live land mines are still in use around the world, the organization devoted to eliminating them said Monday.
Handicap International told a news conference that at a Vienna conference in October it will seek wholesale changes in a 1980 convention that governs use of the mines.
The organization--which is campaigning for a new accord to restrict use of land mines in peacetime as well as during conflicts and to prohibit the use of mines intended to maim--said 1 million people have been killed.
