Apple Pressures IBM to Clone Mac: Apple Computer Inc. has stepped up pressure on IBM Inc. to clone the Macintosh, revealing discussions between the companies that apparently included a potential merger. But IBM said it would continue to produce personal computers of its own design and declined comment on merger talks reportedly held a year ago. Apple, enjoying high demand but hampered by a shortage of parts, is trying to boost Macintosh’s market share, which has fallen below 10% this year. Demand is also high for IBM-compatible PCs.
