Top seeded Boris Becker beat France’s Yannick Noah, 6-4, 7-5, and reached the quarterfinals of the $1-million Swiss Open at Basel, Switzerland.

No. 5 Jim Courier defeated Lionel Roux of France, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), and Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4.

Third-seeded Lindsay Davenport of the United States was upset by Joanette Kruger of South Africa, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the WTA tournament at Leipzig, Germany.

No. 2 Magdalena Maleeva defeated Larisa Neiland of Latvia, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2; Lindsay Lee defeated No. 5 Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, and No. 7 Marianne Werdel-Witmeyer beat Kristie Boogert of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-2.
