San Gabriel Valley : Strike Leads to Move to Fire Contractor
The Arcadia City Council is poised to fire its contractor for a $6-million downtown revitalization after delays caused by striking workers.
The council is expected on Tuesday to approve City Manager William Kelly’s recommendation to cancel the contract of Sully-Miller Contracting Co. of Anaheim and hire another firm to complete the “Downtown 2000” project.
Last month, the council suspended Sully-Miller, saying delays caused by the three-week strike--which left Huntington Drive with a single lane of traffic in each direction, no flood control systems and a partial sidewalk--were a threat to public health.
The council then hired another contractor to do construction during the stoppage, saying the delays would postpone completion until after arrival of the rainy season and turn the city’s main thoroughfare to mud.
Sully-Miller officials told the city on Aug. 28 that they would sue the city for suspending the firm. Company officials were unavailable for comment Friday.
Kelly said the firm’s deadline for completing the first phase of the project along Huntington Drive was Oct. 4.
