The U.S. Supreme Court, agreeing to consider whether states may offer "separate and unequal" educational opportunities to women, said that it will rule on the constitutionality of the men-only policy at the Virginia Military Institute. The case, to be heard in January, could yield a broad ruling on gender discrimination. VMI and The Citadel in South Carolina are the nation's only all-male public colleges. The Citadel recently admitted a woman, Shannon Faulkner, after a lengthy court battle, but she withdrew after a few days.
