NBA training camps open today, with the Lakers in Honolulu and the Clippers at UC Irvine.

Laker Coach Del Harris will have 13 sound players and another, George Lynch, who is expected to be sidelined the first 10 days while recovering from foot surgery. And, unlike a year ago, when there was a new coach and the possibility of two new starters, the biggest battle may be between Pig Miller and Corie Blount for backup power forward.

“We have nine players back from last year and we’ve all gone through about 100 games together, so that kind of experience is a real plus for all of us,” Harris said. “That gives us something to build on for this year instead of starting with a blank page. That means training camp should be more productive.”

Clipper Coach Bill Fitch, meanwhile, will be working in three new crucial players: Rodney Rogers, Brian Williams and Brent Barry. Stanley Roberts will return after sitting out most of the last two seasons because of blown Achilles’ tendons in both legs, and Terry Dehere will get an extended look at point guard.

“There’s no such thing as an easy training camp,” said Fitch, who starts with 16 players, 17 if Eric Riley accepts a qualifying offer. “It will be different. There’ll be a lot of quick stuff because the recall will be there. Last year, we had no recall, so you do it over and over until you get it. But we’ve got a lot of new faces and we’ve got some old faces playing new spots.”

A capsule look at the two camps and where the trims figure to come:

LAKERS

Guards--Nick Van Exel, Eddie Jones (likely to regain the starting job at shooting guard), Anthony Peeler, Sedale Threatt and Frankie King are in. Kareem Townes is out.

Forwards--Cedric Ceballos, Elden Campbell, Miller, Blount and Lynch are in. Fred Roberts and Gerard King are on the bubble, probably fighting for the job as 12th man. Looking for some help inside, and a backup for Vlade Divac at center, the Lakers have talked with free agent Jayson Williams for the available $1-million slot and have been interested in Stacey King for the minimum.

Centers--Divac is in. Campbell is the backup.

CLIPPERS

Guards--Pooh Richardson, Malik Sealy, Dehere and Barry are in. Ma Jian is out.

Forwards--Loy Vaught, Lamond Murray, Eric Piatkowski and Rogers are in. Shawn Jamison and Logan Vandervelden are out. Charles Outlaw, signed Thursday, is on the bubble.

Centers--Williams and Roberts are in. Constantin Popa and Keith Tower are out. Riley is on the bubble, if he’s here at all.
