Laura Chick Needs to Make Up Her Mind

* Talk about arrogance! Does Laura Chick really believe we’re that dumb when she writes the Times (Valley Edition, Sept. 24) and claims she was misunderstood when she denied she had called for the suspension of LAPD recruit hiring? The record could not be more clear particularly after voting for the delay. But let’s look at the genesis of this exercise in political waffling. First, Councilwoman Chick gets an initial blast of angry resistance from her constituents. As a result, she claims to have had “private conversations with LAPD commanders” who have told her her policy is the correct one. Who these “commanders” are remains a mystery. Probably to the commanders as well. Finally, an angry groundswell condemns Chick’s silly and politically transparent move. “Alas, poor Yorick . . . I never said anything of the kind!” Is it any wonder she is becoming known as the “waffle iron” among many of her constituents?
