GROZNY, Russia — Two car bombs exploded and a grenade was fired at European mediators’ headquarters here in the Chechen capital on Saturday, signs of increasing tension a day after the top Russian commander was gravely wounded.
Assailants also opened fire in a hostel for Russian construction workers Saturday, killing four and injuring several others. No other details were immediately available.
“The situation is bad,” Pelen Olivier, deputy head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe mission to Chechnya, told Russian television. The OSCE is mediating peace talks between Russia and the Chechen rebels.
News reports said no one was injured in the car bombings Saturday or in the attack on the OSCE building. Reports said a grenade fired from a rifle-mounted launcher hit the roof of OSCE headquarters.
