Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Mothers to Get Baby AIDS Test Results
- Share via
The results of AIDS tests given to all newborn babies in the state will soon be available to their mothers, New York Gov. George Pataki announced. The new policy, which the Pataki administration believes is the only one of its kind in the nation, is part of a settlement of a lawsuit against the state by the Assn. to Benefit Children, a nonprofit group that demanded disclosure of the HIV tests. All newborns in New York state currently are tested for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, but the results are used only for statistical analysis and are not disclosed to the babies’ parents.
