Hurricane’s Damage Estimated: Hurricane Opal wreaked $2.1 billion in damage to insured property in six states, according to the latest insurance industry estimate. The study is the first official damage tally based on tours of the damaged areas and surveys of companies by American Insurance Services Group Inc., a trade group. The preliminary $1.8-billion estimate made last week was based on a computer-generated program examining insured property in the region. Opal slammed into the Florida Panhandle on Oct. 4 and also ripped through Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
