Hilton Head Free Clinic’s Chief Resigns
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The founder of a clinic where retired physicians provide free medical and dental care for those on this resort island who can’t afford it has resigned as chairman.
Dr. Jack McConnell, who founded the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic three years ago, said he resigned to keep a promise to his wife that he would step down by Christmas.
McConnell, a retired researcher, said he has been spending up to 60 hours a week at the clinic. Now he says he’ll probably spend the same amount of time helping some of the 492 towns that have been in touch with him about setting up similar clinics.
“I can’t resist that call for help,” McConnell said. “I’d like to think I’ll be able to become a good golfer, but I know better.”
