SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” apparently has made a major contribution to the Halloween get-ups this year in the form of the Dancing Itos. Adults are buying several at a time to make up their own chorus line.

At Magic World Costuming, which has the most complete inventory of affordable, quality costumes in the San Fernando Valley, the robe runs $24.99 and the beard $4.99. Throw on a little makeup and the outfit is complete.

Because I generally write about bargains, I must say there are cheaper costumes all over town, but quality is the key at Magic World, where you won’t find that packaged junk that other shops carry.

You can buy or rent adult costumes at Magic World, but children’s outfits are for purchase only, and most range from $18.99 to $30. Disney characters are always reliable choices for the little ones, and it’s no surprise that this year Pocahontas outfits are hot.

Magic World has a version, much nicer then the Disney offering, which is sold for $34.95. It is so pretty that many a young girl will undoubtedly want to wear hers on other occasions.

Figure on seeing a lot of the White Power Ranger at your door as well as Batman, Robin or Spider Man--all at $22.99. There’s an entire section here for Trekkies, from the original “Star Trek” to “The Next Generation” and then “Deep Space Nine.” These run $29.95 for children, with an adult version at $34.95.

According to co-owner John Tolson, parents usually get the kids’ costumes organized first and then concentrate later on their own. This year Magic World has inaugurated a rental plan for adult costumes that is indeed a deal.

You pay the rental for one day and may keep it for the whole month, which should take care of several parties and those folks who wear special outfits to work (there’s something unnerving about bank tellers in costume).

Glitz is the word this year for many costumes, and the sleazy “Showgirls” outfits deliver a lot of that for $34.95. For couples who like to dress up in complementary outfits, there are dance hall girls and cowboys, gangster couples and harem dancers with Valentino-type partners. Purchase prices are $32.99 to $44.99. Rentals on any of these range from $35 to $55, with accessories included.

The quality of the rentals is generally slightly better than those for purchase. Sizes for women run 6 to 14 and for men, from small to extra large.
