Rocket Hits Market in Afghan Capital, Killing 8

KABUL, Afghanistan — A rocket slammed into a busy market in central Kabul on Saturday, killing eight people and wounding 18, as a U.N. envoy made a new effort to broker a cease-fire among Afghanistan’s warring parties.
The attack was blamed on the Taliban rebels, former Islamic students who have vowed to topple the Afghan government and impose strict Islamic rule.
Another rocket landed just half a mile from where U.N. envoy Mahmoud Mestiri had earlier in the day met with government leaders in an effort to broker a cease-fire so that he can hold peace talks.
