Bud Brown Honored for Civic Service

The 1995 Fernando Award for San Fernando Valley civic leadership was given to Bud Brown, chairman of New Directions for Youth, in a ceremony Friday night at the Warner Center Marriott hotel.

Brown, 62, of Thousand Oaks, was the 37th winner of the annual award, presented in recognition of a lifetime of volunteer activity in the San Fernando Valley.

Brown was one of five nominees for the award. Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan announced him as the winner to a ballroom audience of more than 400 people. Brown will be honored with a dinner in February.

He has worked with at-risk youth in the Valley since 1978, when he joined HEAVY, which eventually became New Directions for Youth, based in Van Nuys. He retired two years ago as public affairs manager for GTE in San Fernando.

The other finalists for this year’s Fernando Award were CSUN President Blenda Wilson; San Fernando Valley Charitable Foundation President Nancy Schmidt; North Hollywood insurance broker Ken Banks, who is active in many local community groups; and Chairman of the Valley Industry and Commerce Assn. Walter Mosher.
