Bone Marrow Drive Seeks Help for Carew’s Daughter
A bone marrow drive has been scheduled Nov. 12 at Planet Hollywood to help find a potential donor for cancer patients, including the 17-year-old daughter of baseball Hall of Famer and Angels hitting instructor Rod Carew.
Michelle Carew was diagnosed with a life-threatening form of leukemia in September and will most likely need a bone marrow transplant, according to her physician, Dr. Mitchell S. Cairo. She is undergoing chemotherapy at Childrens Hospital of Orange County.
In case her own bone marrow is not suitable for a transplant, Michelle will need matching bone marrow from an unrelated donor, as neither her sibling nor family members have matched her blood type, officials said.
The upcoming bone marrow drive will register potential donors, particularly those from minority ethnic groups, for Michelle and other cancer patients.
Rod Carew will kick off the drive, which will run from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a discussion on the need for bone marrow donors. Angel players, including Garret Anderson, Jim Edmonds, Mark Langston, Greg Myers and J.T. Snow, along with former Angel Bert Blyleven, will also help out.
Donors must be at least 18 and healthy. A small amount of blood is collected and tested. Information on the person’s blood type is then entered into a national database managed by the National Marrow Donor Program.
