Two bombs exploded at the entrance to Sri Lanka’s army headquarters today, killing at least nine people and wounding two, witnesses said. Two children were among the dead or wounded.

Gunshots were also fired at the heavily fortified base on the capital’s seafront. Witnesses said some of the shots were being fired from the grounds of the five-star Taj Samudra Hotel. One of the bombs exploded in the army headquarters, another in a small grocery store about 300 yards from the entrance, witnesses said. One man was blown in half when the shop bomb exploded, leading police to believe it was the work of a rebel Tamil Tiger suicide bomber.

Police said the blasts were most likely the work of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, fighting for a homeland in the north and east of the country.
