SERVING IN SILENCE by Margarethe Cammermeyer with Chris Fisher (Penguin: $11.95; 308 pp., illustrated). Cammermeyer, whose life became the basis of a TV movie starring Glenn Close, is the highest-ranking officer to be discharged from the U.S. Army for homosexuality. Born in occupied Norway, Cammermeyer joined the Army because she believed her adopted country required the protection of a strong military. She served for 26 years, earning numerous commendations, and as she gradually became aware of her sexuality, her sense of honor kept her from denying it. Reflecting on the controversy her dismissal provoked, she concludes: “I want my sons and their children . . . to live in an America that truly offers freedom and justice for all.”
