Cammermeyer, whose life became the basis of a TV movie starring Glenn Close, is the highest-ranking officer to be discharged from the U.S. Army for homosexuality. Born in occupied Norway, Cammermeyer joined the Army because she believed her adopted country required the protection of a strong military. She served for 26 years, earning numerous commendations, and as she gradually became aware of her sexuality, her sense of honor kept her from denying it.
