South Bay : Man Surrenders to Police for 1994 Slaying

An alleged gang member who said he no longer could live with his crime turned himself in for a murder he committed nearly two years ago, police said.

Barry Lamon, 32, of Los Angeles, called the Inglewood police Tuesday morning and confessed to the 1994 murder of Dion Bright, also of Los Angeles. He told police that the homicide was retaliation for the fatal shooting of one of his fellow gang members.

Lamon told police he felt an overwhelming sense of guilt when he learned that 25-year-old Bright was not a gang member and had nothing to do with the fellow gang member’s death, said Inglewood Sgt. Bill Thompson.

The homicide that Lamon turned himself in for occurred on the 3200 block of 111th Street on Feb. 15, 1994. Lamon had walked up to Bright, who was standing on the street corner that Lamon claimed as the rival gang’s turf, Thompson said. Lamon told police he confronted the group and shot Bright.

The shooting was meant to avenge the death of William Jones, 28, who was killed two days earlier on the same street.

Lamon was arraigned Wednesday and is being held at the Los Angeles County Jail without bail.
