Group Explains How to Get Internships

Inroads, a national organization that focuses on finding two- and four-year paid internships for minority high school graduates, will put out the word today on how its program works.

“We’re digging deeper to develop our student base in Orange County,” said Calvin Lyons, the corporate relations manager of the Los Angeles Inroads office.

The free presentation will be at 10 a.m. at Johnson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1306 W. 2nd St.

The 25-year-old St. Louis-based organization has offices nationwide, Lyons said. The Los Angeles office works to place eligible students at 61 participating Southern California businesses, 18 of which are in Orange County.

Lyons said anyone may participate in an Inroads program, but the organization puts special focus on finding positions for underrepresented minorities such as Latinos, blacks and Native Americans.

To be considered, a student must have a 3.0 or better grade-point average, a combined score of 800 or better on the Scholastic Assessment Test or rank within the top 10% of his or her high school class.
