Council Campaigns Against Airstrip Plan

After registering their formal opposition to commercial use of the military airstrip at Point Mugu, Camarillo officials vowed to send copies of the resolution to Navy brass and anyone else who will listen.

The five-page document, approved late Wednesday, details why Camarillo City Council members oppose opening the military airstrip to passenger service, a plan recommended in a feasibility study and supported by other cities.

Ventura County has joined with the cities of Thousand Oaks, Oxnard, Ventura and Port Hueneme in forming the Point Mugu Regional Airport Authority to pursue commercial jet service at the airstrip.

Camarillo has refused to join the authority, saying that allowing so many jets into the airspace above that city would destroy the quality of life there.

Council members adopted the resolution unanimously with little discussion.

Specifically, the resolution states that the airport would cause air pollution, increase noise, jeopardize air safety, threaten nearby wetlands and lead to farmland development.

Council members directed city staff to send copies of the resolution to each member of the authority, Navy officials and elected representatives in Washington, D.C.

“I think it expresses the concerns we all have,” Councilwoman Charlotte Craven said.
