COUNTYWIDE : Supervisors May Oppose Nuclear Waste Transport

Share

The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo is not expected to begin shipping radioactive waste to a permanent repository until at least 2010.

But Ventura County officials want to be sure that the shipments don’t come through this area when they are eventually made.

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday will consider approving a resolution opposing the transportation of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste through the county.

Recently proposed federal legislation would establish a management system for the transportation, storage and disposal of spent radioactive fuel and waste, according to Penny Bohannon, deputy administrative officer, writing in a report to the board. Bohannon advised the supervisors to notify state and federal agencies of their opposition before any transportation routes are established.

Bohannon also noted in her report that the federal legislation could result in earlier waste shipments by Diablo because it would allow for the development of an interim storage site away from the plant by 1998.
