San Gabriel Valley : Law on Registering Bullet Sales Repealed
Azusa has repealed a 7-month-old law requiring registration of all bullet purchases.
The City Council voted 3 to 2 Monday to nullify the law, which some council members and police labeled as ineffective in preventing or solving crime. Police officials said they have yet to use the registry to track a suspect.
“It was a feel-good, nonsensical measure,” said Azusa City Councilman David Hardison. He added that the law would have been more effective if it had been enacted statewide, noting that a person who wanted to get around the Azusa law had only to purchase bullets elsewhere.
Mayor Stephen Alexander and Councilwoman Cristina Cruz-Madrid, who opposed lifting the ban, could not be reached for comment.
The measure, which will remain in effect until Jan. 1, mandates that stores stocking ammunition must record the buyer’s name, address, date of birth and proof of identification before selling any munitions to a consumer.
The Azusa law was modeled on an ordinance passed by Pasadena in March.
