Colleges : Campus scene : COSTA MESA : Applications to OCC Increase 22%
Orange Coast College has seen a surge of requests for application information, officials say, thanks to the repeal of a special enrollment fee.
The college reports that applications for its spring 1996 classes, which begin in January, are up by 22% compared with the same time last year.
In 1993, the state Legislature imposed additional fees on students at community colleges who already held bachelor’s and advanced degrees. Those students were assessed an additional $50 for each unit they took. Other students paid $13 fee for each unit.
“When the $50 fee was imposed six semesters ago, we lost more than 1,800 students at OCC,” said Nancy L. Kidder, OCC’s administrative dean for admissions and records. “Early indications are that many of those students plan to come back this spring.”
Kidder said the additional fees proved a hardship for many prospective students with degrees.
