COSTA MESA : 3,000-Square-Foot Lot Given Back to Owner

Share

A small lot given to the city more than 20 years ago for a street project is being returned.

City officials said that the 3,000-square-foot parcel, which has a gardening tool shed on it, is not needed for public use, so they will give it back to its original owner: the Back Bay Gardens Assn. of Homeowners.

Owners and developers of the property donated the parcel in the 1970s for a widening of Tustin Avenue.

The city never carried out the project, however, and never used the land for any other purpose.

The Back Bay Gardens neighborhood group uses the property to store gardening equipment.

One resident at Monday’s City Council meeting proposed putting the property up for sale, but council members rejected that option.

“I think it would be wrong for the city to decide it no longer needed [the property] and then sell it,” Mayor Joe Erickson said.
