Re “Global Warming Middle Ground,” (Commentary, Nov. 16): Robert Lempert and Michael Schlesinger summed it up in their sentence, “Both sides offer policies based on their predictions.” Both are wrong by definition.

The only common sense policy is simple: If you have a house on the banks of a river that frequently floods, do you relocate your house a few yards or reroute the mighty river for many miles?

Let us just strive for a healthy economy with innovation and optimal recycling. Do not let sanitation develop to pathological extremes and then call it environmentalism. Aim for a day-to-day best effort, personal and local, to keep our environment clean.

Let us not allow these long-range prophets to profit from our anxieties. Leave us peasants alone. We have a long revered history of how to adapt and survive peacefully and prosperously. We don’t mind if you wash your own hands 50 times a day, but don’t tell us to follow suit.
