Powell Dinner Cancellation Prompts Suit

A $155-million lawsuit was filed against the city of Los Angeles, the City Council, the Los Angeles Police Commission and several other public officials over the cancellation of former LAPD Officer Laurence Powell’s “welcome home” dinner that had been scheduled at the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club.

The suit, which names about 30 defendants, was filed by Americans for Family Values and its founder and President Ezola Foster, who allege that Powell’s 1st and 14th Amendment rights were violated when plans for the December banquet were abruptly canceled by the Revolver and Athletic Club.

The fund-raising dinner had been planned to cover the mounting legal expenses of Powell, who was convicted of violating Rodney G. King’s civil rights and is scheduled for release from a halfway house next month.
