The newly appointed head of President Clinton’s AmeriCorps program visited a safe haven for youth in Pico Union on Wednesday.

Harris Wofford is the chief executive officer of the Corporation for National Service, which oversees AmeriCorps, a program where young people do a year of social work in exchange for college scholarships.

The safe haven that Wofford visited is at Angelica Lutheran Church and provides children with a safe place to study and play after school, said Sandra Choe, spokeswoman for Build Up Los Angeles. The group is a service organization staffed by 150 AmeriCorps members and operates similar safehouses throughout Los Angeles, Choe said.

The youngsters who come to the Pico Union safehouse must spend at least half an hour doing homework or reading and then are allowed to participate in recreational activities.
