From Times Wire Reports

A meeting of European Union foreign ministers overrode Swedish demands that the group take a stronger stand against the Nigerian military regime that executed nine dissidents last month. The ministers agreed instead to impose an unspecified ban on sporting contacts with Nigeria. After Nigeria hanged writer Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other human rights activists Nov. 10, the EU banned arms sales to the country, cut off development aid and tightened visa restrictions for government officials. The toughest sanction so far has been Nigeria’s suspension from the Commonwealth, made up of nations that now owe or once owed allegiance to the British crown.
