From Times Wire Reports

Heavy fighting rocked the ethnically divided Burundian capital, Bujumbura, after the Tutsi-dominated army said it had mounted a huge operation to flush out Hutu rebels. “The suburbs were attacked this morning by armed bandits. There have been civilian casualties and some dead--houses have been burned,” an army spokesman said. Witnesses said Hutu rebels were apparently resisting the army operation. Burundi’s ethnic violence pits the country’s Tutsi army against the majority Hutus.
