THE NEED FOR A STURDY FOUNDATION

Share

My husband of 20 years and I read your article “Trouble in the House That Mac Built” (by Susie Linfield, Nov. 5) with gleeful satisfaction. Back in 1975, we were the only couple among all of our friends who believed that there was inherent value in signing our names to a marriage license.

We have spent the better part of the last 20 years shaking our heads as one by one these couples drifted apart and divorced, never having understood that you can’t put the Sears tower on quicksand.

Now your article points out a very public example of the same phenomenon. If Pat Brentrup and Kit Culkin had only spent some time building a mature relationship, perhaps they would have had the sense and courage to put their names to that powerful little piece of paper--a marriage license.
