AIDS Care of Ventura County has received a $12,000 grant to beef up support groups and services for people infected and affected by HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Catholic Healthcare West, the parent company of St. John’s Regional Medical Center, awarded the money to the Ventura-based nonprofit group.

AIDS Care will use the money to hire a part-time staff member to expand mental health and spiritual support groups for people with HIV, or family members of those who have the disease.

The money also will be used to train health care workers who want to develop their knowledge of human immunodeficiency virus and offer counseling services to people with the virus.

“We are delighted,” said Doug Green, executive director of AIDS Care. “We are completely thrilled that this program is being formalized and strengthened.”

The $12,000 grant represents about half of what it will take to run the expanded program for one year, Green said.

AIDS Care plans to raise funds to match that amount, he said, assuring that the expanded support groups and services will be available all of next year.
